Phil Marsh -The Uma

Musician
The Uma

Emerging high-octane outfit The Uma have come out of lockdown all guns blazing, with live shows aplenty, a new single, Bring Me Down, and an EP in the pipeline. The Shropshire band’s vocalist, Phil Marsh, told us about his journey so far and his fondness for his Aston Spirit/Halo combo…

The Uma
Genesis

“I remember hearing my mum doing her exercises downstairs and I’d hear Black Sabbath blaring up the stairs and this would be most nights. I’d go downstairs well past my bed-time to sing along. The Beatles, The Monkees… it all just hit me like melodic magic. Then I remember her putting on Genesis one evening and that was it. I was OBSESSED on an entirely new level and from that day on music was my life. Singing got me loads of attention - I was a complete peacock even as a child. I adored it. We used to go to Spain two or three times a year, my dad’s friend owned a karaoke bar and they couldn’t get me off!

I’m first and foremost a vocalist and performer; that’s what I was put on this earth to do. I adore songwriting, being part of that collective magic in a writing situation with people, but NOTHING beats standing on a stage in front of people using what ya got!

I’ve been singing since I was around five so my journey has taken me through many bands and college and university. I suffer with dyslexia amongst other learning difficulties so singing was the only thing that got me through! I’ve toured south America and that was insane, however I know the best parts of my career and journey with the UMA are yet to come.”

Unleashing the beast

"I’m a typical vocalist, I rock up and do my thing, however I have to mentally be in the game so I warm up for a good 45 minutes pre-show or studio session, I’ll drink herbal tea’s DR. VOX or Throat Coat and I like a small whisky or beer to go with this. When working on ideas in the studio and recording we use my Aston Spirit – it’s mega, and will be assisting on the next UMA releases. I also adore my Aston Halo! I recently moved houses and with no furniture in my room it sucked to record in until I got that thing! Absolute perfection, regardless of the non-acoustic treated room.

I think the biggest trick with the Spirit is how it REALLY captures tonality and timbre. I find playing with the dynamics and gain really allows you to embrace emotion and put it into songs. Not all mics can capture the warmth!

The Uma are currently working on our EP and new releases as COVID ruined our launch, as it did most of the industry, so we’re coming back with an even bigger BANG! We have an amazing manager and team behind us and we can’t wait to unleash this BEAST!"

Out-takes

Who are your favourite artists?

I Live in the 80’s and 90’s so for me Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake and RATT. I’m also a sucker for old school EMO too. LOVE The Used and Fightstar, Armour for Sleep, Dance Gavin Dance. I’m also into my Country music Jordan Davies is a particular favourite. Also Busted, McFly and Palaye Royale

If you weren’t working in music what would you be doing?

I have no idea… probably acting as that’s soething I can do and would like to take more seriously.

What would your fantasy mic be?

On-stage mic would have to be a mix of Stephen Pearcy’s mic holder (its a knuckle duster) and it would have to have the elements of the Spirit but with a renaissance piece of art with cherubs and demons on the side. haha.

What are the 4 words you’d chose to describe Aston, or your experience with the brand?

HORNY, SEXY, CARING, BANGING

What was the first song that made you cry?

I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing by Aersomith. I mean Dianne Warren is an incredible songwriter and most things she does pull at my heartstrings but I remember being a kid and this hitting me in a way like no other. I think it started something because everything makes me cry now!
